Cycled: 6.29km//23min//16.04km/hr
Wednesday September 25
At some point last night a gale force wind (close to it) set in. The tent shuddered constantly, and the fly sounded as if it would rip of at any moment. As 7 am approached we'd both been awake for hours, listening to the tents battle with the wind. We cracked opened the iPad and consulted the online weather forecast. A steady 20 miles/hr all day - against the direction we wanted to head (Callanish Stone). Tomorrow, a mere 7 miles/hr. We considered our options, and decided that cycling against strong winds all day (the tears, the raw face, the noise) was not what we were up for. Also, the deadline for my paper edits, Sept 30th, was fast approaching, and we could well be entering a no internet zone again after leaving Stornoway. We decided to head back to the library to continue our computer work and leave Callanish for tomorrow.
Fast forward to 5PM: my work was done, and Jenn had made terrific progress on the blog. There may have been a slight hiccup in the library when I pulled out my laptop in the presence of the librarian, and a rather large burgundy spider came crawling out. I was nonplussed, the librarian, not so much. Then the inevitable conundrum: 1) let the spider go free in the library (librarian, tsk tsk), 2) kill the spider with my laptop (librarian, tsk tsk), or 3) corral the spider back into my bag (librarian, tsk tsk). It was a triple no win.
After the library we made our daily stop at Tesco's. We discovered the hot meat section, and 10 minutes later could be seen devouring a pound of of ribs in the parking lot, much to the curiosity of onlookers. We returned to camp to drink the only imported Belgian beer we could get our hands on, and resolved to see Callanish tomorrow (really this time!).
