Day 52: Scourie - Durness (end of Loch Eriboll)

Cycle: 75.46 km / 4hr53min / 15.44km/hr
Sunday September 29

Time to hustle out of Scotland? Our destination today was Cape Wrath. The ride out there was beautiful, with rolling hills, rock, and open countryside devoid of people, cars, and building. Also, there are so few trees, the rocks are clearly evident, and display the force(s) at work in this area: glaciers. Ice pushing, plowing, scraping. Seasons are changing, and fields of once green ferns are now turning a rusty orange and yellow colour.

We made it to Durness with a bit of a tail wind, 1.5 hrs before a small ferry boat was scheduled to make the crossing to Cape Wrath.  After pitching our tent at a campsite and visiting the local Spar (closed), we returned for the sailing. Alas, the time came, and Mr. Tour man appeared to tell us that 3 people was not enough to warrant sailing the boat or running the bus on the other side. Ugh.  Now What?

Disheartened, we rode back to camp, and took in the incredible scenery, cliffs, and sandy beaches. We then showered and packed up our tent to go for a beer, and cover some more distance before night fall. We finally stopped for the day at the turn of a hairpin around Loch Eriboll. Dinner would be a mash of couscous, iceburg lettuce, cucumber, and tomato... followed with a small bowl of oatmeal.

Occupational hazard. Jenn gets sheep shit on her bike after she panics over a possible tick on her leg.

An interesting hillside gouged by water.
You can see a car coming a long way off!
All of our favorite rocks in one place!!
Durness Beach.
