Day 50: Stornoway - Ullapool

Cycle: 19.42km//1hr27min//13.37km/hr
Friday September 27

Back to the Scottish mainland. Good bye odd feeling of isolation... or is it desolation.

Cycle tourists stand out, especially in such a remote area as the Hebrides (and in the off season). Going into the terminal I hear the whispers "those are the bikes we saw in the ferry into Castle bay.". Or "aren't those the bikes we saw on the road." I surmise we are virtually famous, Madalene insists it is just a small island.

The ferry crossing back to Ullapool was much nicer than the sail out. We even had dolphins jumping around the boat heading into the port. On the mainland it was agreed that we would wild camp. It was a long, hilly 10km from the ferry to the (random) place where we would stay the night.  We are definitely getting to know each other better, and where the safe and danger zones are. For example, Madalene has learned that it is not wise to talk to me at the top of really big climbs until I speak first, particularly if she has just breezed up the same hill I am huffing and puffing over! Midges got nothing on us and our sandlewood!

Pretty. Calm. Waters.
On the road out of Ullapool.
A cute beach just north of Ullapool. Perfectly smooth round stones lie everywhere.
